The Leadership Story

Early in my career, I was told something most leaders hear: “You can't be friends with the people you lead.” The conventional wisdom was clear: friendship and accountability don't mix. Keep your distance. Stay above it.

But that never felt right. I have always led from a personal place—wanting to genuinely connect with the people around me. So I chose a different path.

What I discovered over 28+ years is that the conventional wisdom had it backwards. Yes, holding a friend accountable is hard. But when you build the relationship first—when you create trust, set clear expectations upfront, and show up consistently for every person and every situation—then the hard conversations aren't destructive. They're expected. The relationship can hold the weight of accountability because the foundation was built to carry it.
